Hey, I'm Ciara!
I'm the founder of Ciarabeo! I have a deep love of photography, web design and I'm always yearning for my next creative adventure. My mission? To help others embrace the art of creativity.
So I want to let you in on a little secret about how to take BETTER self-portraits & it’s all about remote & tether shooting. Now my quarantine vibes have been… less than productive BUT I wanted to make a video about the different kinds of ways that you can take self-portraits! Especially for those like me that have cameras without a flip out screens!
These are all techniques that I use when I have to be my own model. I broke down everything so that you can beat the learning curve and start shooting at home! It’s my first video up on youtube so go check it out!
Here are all the techniques you can try:
Shooting with a Remote
What you Need: Camera + Remote
I use this remote from Sony! It’s a great option if you want something small and concealable to take a quick self-portrait at home or out in the world! It offers great functionality and a good range. I usually use the 2-second shutter delay button to get myself ready for the shot.
Use an Intervalometer
What you Need: Your Camera! (or external intervalometer if your camera doesn’t have one.
Perfect for travel photos and photos with your tripod! You just set the number of shots, the interval between each shot & you can set the focus and position yourself in the frame!
NOTE: If you use the intervalometer built into your camera, it won’t refocus on the subject between each shot, for this you’ll have to get an external intervalometer so that you can move around the frame and your auto-focus will find you!
Remote Shoot with Your Phone
What you Need: Your Smartphone & Wifi Enabled DSLR or Mirrorless Camera
Every wifi capable camera comes with a mobile app where you can see the image on your camera mirrored on your phone. Each camera manufacturer app is different but I’ve used both Canon and Sony and it’s been very helpful when trying to get a good shot!
Tether Shoot with Your Computer
What you Need: Your Laptop, Tether Tools Cord, Tripod, and DSLR or Mirrorless Camera
This is by far the most extensive set up for self-portraits, it requires the most equipment BUT it also gives you the greatest advantage with customization when shooting!
Let me know what you think! This is my first video & blog post on my channel so I’d love to know what you think!
